THE NOEMAN PEOPLE.

From legends and traditions we turn to the
Norman people. From the latter part of the eighth
century and throughout the ninth, the shores of
England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Italy, Holland and
Sicily, not to mention other countries, were
constantly pillaged by the Vikings from Scandinavia.
The annals of these countries are full of stories of
their plunders. No abbey along the coasts was safe,
and no village or town either. Their terrific ravages
sent the people on a run at the mere mention of
their approach.

The name, Normans, or Northmen, simply implied
men from the north without any particular
mentioning of any northern country. In England they
’were generally spoken of as Danes, and in Scotland
*8 Norwegians. The early songs of Scotland
sometimes mention the chiefs from Norway.

When Charlemagne died the Viking ravages
became worse than ever. Expeditions even sailed up
the Seine and dared to anchor outside of the walls of
Paris. Charles the Simple saved the city from
pillage only by paying the dangerous pirates a sum of
•jOOO livres in silver. Encouraged by this success
the uorthmen sailed back to Rouen and began
devastating the country. The people fled in terror, but the
hrave Archbishop Francis dared to approach the
strangers to plead for the city. Finally a stretch
