mountain.
Very soon young men began to swarm about the
royal palace. They came singly, in scores and
hundreds. Some were tall, some short, some were lean
and pale, others fat and rosy. They came with
smiles, took the princess in their arms and started up
the mountain in glee, but set her down, exhausted
before half tbe distance bad been reached. The
people were invited to witness the attempts and had
their fill of excitement.
By and by the lovers disappeared, one by one and
the princess was left alone. Then, one day, came a
young, beautiful man to the palace. When the king
heard of his demand he grew dark and advised the
youth to depart in peace. But when the princess saw
him, she fell in love at sight. Taking the young man
aside she advised him to be careful and if possible
secure a potion which would give him strength enough
to carry her to the mountain-top.
The young man listened to her advice and at once
went to an aunt in Palermo, Sicily, who gave him a
certain potion strong enough to carry ten princesses
to the top of the mountain. At the appointed day
crowds of people gathered to witness the event. With
hope and vigor the youngster took the princess in his
arms and began ascent. Having reached half of the
distance, the princess advised him to stop and take a
drink from the vial, but he ceased not. When two
thirds of the mountain was reached she asked him
again, but without results. Finally the top came in
sight. But scarcely had he reached it before he fell
