tained in the saga, I have for many years had a
suspicion that Thorlinn Karlsefni and his party sailed
beyond Nova Scotia, —farther than Dr, Storm was
willing to concede. I have never before given
expression to this suspicion on account of not having had
an opportunity to visit this part of the coast. But
some months ago, I received a couple of letters from
a gentleman in Washington (Mr. William H.
Babcock), who has devoted much time, not only to the
literature pertaining to the early voyages to
America, but also to a study of the coasts of New England,
Nova Scotia and adjacent regions, and he writes that
he is convinced that Thorfinn Karlsefni stopped only
for a brief visit on the coast of Nova Scotia, and then
sailed around the southern part of the peninsula,
and reached regions so strongly marked that
identification seems easily possible.

At this point, the saga says: “They went on board
the ship, whereupon Karlsefni and his followers held
on their way. They stood into a bay with their ships.
There was an island out at the mouth of the bay,
about which there were strong wherefore

they called it Straum-ey, There were so many birds
there that it was scarcely possible to step between
the eggs. They sailed into the fjord and called it
Straum-fjord, and carried their cargoes ashore from
the ships, and established themselves there * * *

It was a fine country there. There were mountains
thereabouts.”

If I mistake not, this passage will prove to be the
most important part of the Vinland sagas in the way
°f establishing the identity of the regions visited,
