were such strong ( miklir) currents that they named
it Current Island, and situated at the mouth of a bay,
points to something that it ought to be possible to
identify even after the lapse of a thousand years.
The question therefore arises: Is there, iu
reasonable proximity to NT ova Scotia, any such island, of so
pronounced a character and environment as not to
have been materially affected by any sort of change
during the last nine hundred years? For it is certain
that there have been changes due to a gradual eleva- _
tion of the coast along the upper Atlantic sea-board;
and by reason of this it will doubtless be difficult to
identify such a place as was later visited by
Karl-sefni, where the saga says: “They sailed for a long
time and until they came at last to a river which
Sowed down from the land into a lake, and so into
the sea. There were great bars at the mouth of the
river, so that it could only be entered at the height
of the floodtide. Karlsefni and his men sailed into
the mouth of the river and called it there Hop.”
Such a place as this could easily he transformed by
a gradual elevation or sinking of the land, and
doubtless has been. But the places which it seems very
likely can be identified with Stream Island and
Stream Fjord are things so pronounced and definite
in character that nothing short of a cataclysm could
affect them.
In the opinion of my eastern informant, Stream
Island is the present Grand Manan Island at the
mouth of the Bay of Fundy. And the bay that
Karlsefni sailed into may well have been
Passama-quoddy Bay, or an arm of it, instead of the Bay of
Fundy. The strong currents and tides of Fundy
