OLOF FERDINAND NELSON.



Olof Ferdinand Nelson, member of the Osgood
Company, photo-engravers and eleetrotypers, was
the son of Olof Nilsson, a cabinetmaker of the city
of Halmstad, Sweden. He was born there April 22,
1867, and obtained his education partly in his native
town, partly in the public schools in Chicago, having
come to this city in 1882 with his parents.

He worked as an electrotyper until he was a master
of the craft. In 1890 lie was offered the position of
foreman in the Osgood plant, advancing next to that
of superintendent. He became a member of the firm
several years ago.

The so-called nickeltype process, making
electrotypes more durable than by the old process, and
superior in quality, is the invention of Mr. Nelson. It

is used extensively in the United States and Europe.

When in 1883 the Svithiod Male Chorus was organ-

tzed, Nelson was one of the first to join and took,
ev«r since, an active part in the musical life of the
Swedes in Chicago. He was president of the
American Union of Swedish Singers from 1901 to 1905 and
was the first president of the Swedish Singers’ Union
°f Chicago in 1906. lie acted as treasurer of the
selected chorus of the American Union, which, made
a tour of Sweden in 1897. During the 1910 tour of
Sweden of the same body, Mr. Nelson was president,
aad in this capacity was decorated with the Order
°f Wasa. At the time of his death he was grand
waster of the Independent Order of Svithiod and a
Wember of the council of the Swedish Historical
Society of America.
