The latter is true especially in regard to the great
patriotic festivals at Chicago and Minneapolis. Even
in the Tri-Cities on the Mississippi the
semi-centenary was taken notice of publicly in a unique way,
the national salute of 1862 (34 guns) being fired at
sunrise at the United States Arsenal in honor of the
Monitor’s historic fight of fifty years ago. The salute
was given on petition drawn up by your Secretary
and circulated by Mr. A. 6. Anderson, one of our
members, for signatures of a few leading citizens.
In the matter of promoting the movement to
introduce the study of Swedish in American schools,
our members are also very active and in several
instances they have been and are the prime movers.
The plan proposed by Mr. Alfred Söderström of
Warroad, Minn., looking toward securing a building
as the permanent home of the Swedish Historical
Society and its collections has been under discussion
iu the Couneil, but definite action still remains to
be taken.
Respectfully submitted,
Ernst W, Olson, Secretary.
