hit var tredie söndag och dom övriga söndagarna så går
vi tilsamans och läser i prostilla. Vi har en kar här som
är bättre än många präster i Svärget. Här är en vaker
trakt och även vakert folk i blan amerikanarna...
(The latter part of this letter is wholly personal, with
a number of inquiries about friends and relatives in
Sweden and incidents pertaining to the family.)

Summer of 1866.
To Jonas P. Zackrison.
Dear parents, brothers and sisters: —
I am unable to write anything definite about a journey
to Sweden. I have little inclination to go, as I think it is
rather unnecessary; but if the Lord wills it, so be it. We
do not know how long we will live. I am not surprised
that you do not want to come here, comfortably situated
as you are. (I knew your feelings in the matter before
you wrote). Furthermore, the low value of farms in
Sweden renders it inadvisable to sell at present. I believe,
however, that we can look for a larger influx of Swedes
than ever. This summer has brought an unusual number
of immigrants, They are mostly poor people, but the
poor need not suffer here. They will prosper if they are
able to work.
I will tell you something about our Christmas, The
winter has been very pleasant, with but little cold and
snow. We have fifteen English miles to church, and
therefore did not attend the Christmas services. New Years’
day we attended communion services. A minister comes
here every third Sunday; the other Sundays we gather to
hear the reading of sermons. We have a man in the
community who is a better preacher than many of the
ministers in Sweden. This is a fine community, and we are well
pleased with our American neighbors....
