Beloved parents, sisters, and brothers:—
May the grace and peace of God be with you!
Your letter of November 5th was received the 2d of
the present month, and we wrere glad to know that you
were enjoying good health. We are grateful to God for
the same blessing, and we hope that these simple lines
will find you enjoying this gift of God. We were both
happy and sorry to learn that the Lord had called our
venerable grandmother, happy in the sense that she could
leave her earthly body and take on her heavenly form;
sad in that it reminded us of our transientnature—because
death has come into the world through sin. God
grant that our pilgrimage through life may bring us to
the right hand of Jesus in heaven, where our happiness
will be perfect. With all my heart I wish I could see and
talk with you, but the fulfilment of my wish is in the
hands of the Lord. If in harmony with his will, the Lord
will direct our going to your home.
I have offered my farm for sale, but as yet have had
no opportunity to sell. If I am unable to sell before
spring, I will hold it until fall, because the cost of feeding
cattle until spring would entail a loss if they were sold
then. Sometimes when I read about Sweden in the papers,
that country looks pretty dark to me. Sometime ago I
saw that there are no more than ten million rixdaler in
specie in the Bank of Stockholm. This is humilating in
view of the fact that Sweden’s debt to other countries
totals more than five times that amount. Furthermore
the railroads for the most part were built with English
capital, about half of their earnings in consequence going
out of the realm. I am convinced that times will get
worse than they are at present. Another thing that is
ruining Sweden is the fact that the people are buying
luxuries to excess, using sugar and coffee and wearing
expensive apparel of all kinds. The excess of imports
