in less fortunate circumstances to come to America; they
could not use their little savings to better advantage than
by paying their passage. If Uncle Claus has not enough
to pay his passage, I will help him, because it is hard to
be under others in Sweden. Here he would do well. But
I want to warn you that there is much dissatisfaction
among the immigrants at first. They soon overcome this.
When they become acquainted with the customs of the
country, they are well satisfied.

I will now tell you something about our circumstances
and the weather. We had a fine autumn, without much
falling weather. We had little cold weather until the
8th of this month, when winter came with a little snow
and a north wind. The cold has continued since then.
We have had good crops of almost everything. Some of
my wheat did not turn out well, but that is a small
matter because I put in very little. I raised 80 bushels of
wheat, 450 bushels of oats, 40 bushels of potatoes, and
about 2,350 bushels of corn. My corn crop was unusually
good. I hired a hand to husk corn for a month. I finished
husking the latter part of November. This winter we have
five horses, seventeen cattle, thirteen sheep, and
twenty-four hogs. I have lost quite a number of hogs. We have
butchered a steer and intend to butcher six hogs. I will
give you some information about current prices. Horses
sell for from $100 to $200; yoke of oxen, $100; cows, from
$25 to $50; wheat, from $1.75 to $2.10 per bushel; oats,
30 cents; corn, 40 cents. The price of corn, I think, will
up next year. Cattle are going down, and hogs are
worth half what they brought last year, live hogs selling
five cents per pound as against ten cents a year ago.
Textiles have gone down so that they are just half as
expensive as formerly. The falling prices are caused by the
declining price of gold. I think prices will soon be
normal.

We are going to build a church in this settlement,
which will entail considerable expense. I intend to
donate $100. Very few are able to give anything, as they
just getting a start in life. This will be a large
