over exports contributes to Sweden’s ruination by
draining the country of money. I am also afraid that the new
system of electing members to the Riksdag will work to
the detriment of the country, because only the wealthy will
be chosen to both chambers. [1] The landowners wish only
to oppress the tenants. Sweden is on unsafe foundations,
and from what I hear your king is an intriguer who wants
everything on a grand scale without counting the cost.
But enough of this. I have no doubt that if I wanted to, I
could get along in that country.

I see by your letter that you intend to sell your farm
and retire. It is not surprising that since your children
left home you do not care to continue farming. I wish
you were here; I would take care of you without
expecting one shilling in return. If I thought you would come
and were hesitant about travelling alone, I would go and
get you. It would be very pleasant to have you with us,
and I believe you would be better satisfied, in spite of
the fact that after you retire you will be in good
circumstances where you are. In America people live much
better than in Sweden. We have wheat bread and meat
every day, sugar syrup at every meal, and eggs as well as
many other things as often as desired. Food stuffs seem
to go farther here than in Sweden, making it unnecessary
to be so very saving. You may do as you like, but
consider this an invitation. I think it would be pleasant if
we could live together. I believe that my new brother-in-law
would prosper to a greater degree here than in
Sweden, because young people do very well. Many who
have visited Sweden declare they wouldn’t live there if a
farm were presented to them. I do not believe that,
however, because I believe I could get along. Many become
rich here in a short time. For example, Uncle Sandahl
has more than four times as much as he had in Sweden,
and in addition his sons on their own initiative have
secured large farms—all this having been accomplished
within a short time. I urge my brothers-in-law who are
