way home, and now became convinced that the Baptist

principle was the correct one When I arrived here I

thought a great deal, hut would not wound for anything,
or raise the question in public. However, I had some
private conversations on the subject but—there were new
battles about the Methodist doctrine on perfection and
the Lutheran doctrine about works. These subjects have
ever since remained of greater importance for me.

Nevertheless, my purpose lately has been to join the
Lutherans, but this could not take place in these
settlements without subjecting oneself to compulsion, a
compulsion no less than that of the Swedish state church, I
hear, since Esbjorn was the one who had the most to say
here. Therefore I could not... After that I made a trip
up North to (Sandman, 200 miles above Rock Island, and
also to Minnesota, as to St. Paul and Stillwater, 500 miles
from here, in order to see whether some Swedish
settlement could soon develop there, and thus a field of work
for me where I could exist. I found Swedes there, to he
sure, but very widely scattered, 4 or 5 families at each
place, with 50 to 100 miles between settlements, all in
meagre circumstances... When I returned I heard tell of
strong Baptist movements in Galesburg which led me
to go there... A Baptist minister by the name of Bong
had arrived for a few weeks... On 6 Sundays he had
baptized 106 persons and received 116 by letter. ... I was

then several times admonished to join them Besides,

no teacher there was bound by bishops, rule3 and
regulations... Everyone was entirely free... I agreed to join,
which I also did on June 27. I suppose that I will later
go out as a preacher from this church. A lot of difference
it makes what name we bear, as long as we are the
children of God...

I can greet you from Wiberg... He says that he
intends to go on a journey to America in the beginning of
June... and return to Sweden next summer as a Baptist
Missionary, provided he succeeds in getting support here
for such a purpose...

Your friend and brother in Christ,

G. Palmqvist
