imagine such a thing happening twenty-five or thirty
years ago? To the leaders of Swedish thought, to “the
rich, the well born, and the able,99 in the past generation,
America has been too often the land of greed and of
humbug. That a change of opinion and sentiment has
come, and Archbishop Söderblom9s attitude is not the
only evidence we have of such a change, is something
for which one must be profoundly grateful. It may
perhaps be granted that Archbishop Söderblom, like
Fredrika Bremer seventy-five years ago, because of an
overflowing kindness of heart, has shown a strong
predelection for seeing only the brighter side of our life,
but surely it is better and nobler to look for the good
things than for the bad and to speak of the good
qualities of one9s neighbor rather than to villify.
Assuredly Fredrika Bremer, in her admiration and praise
of American life and institutions, showed a better
understanding of realities than did that distinguished and
severe critic of things American, the English author
Charles Dickens. Archbishop Söderblom gave further
evidence of cordial good will, when he last summer
invited representatives from America to attend the
annual meeting of Swedish clerical lay members at
Stockholm for the discussion of religious and social
questions. The following were invited: Drs. L. G.

Abrahamson, Rock Island, C. J. Petri, Minneapolis,
Peter Peterson, Chicago, E. J. Chindlund, Omaha, 0. J.
Johnson, St. Peter, G. A. Fahlund, Rock Island, Rev.
Conrad Bergend, Chicago, and Professor A. A.
Stom-berg of Minneapolis. Only the first four named found
it possible to accept the invitation and attend the
meeting.
