Bermudas närhet; amiralsskeppet, »The sea Adventure», hade oturen
att stranda på refven, men besättning, redskap och lifsförnödenheter
räddades. En deltagare i äfventyret, Wiliam Strachey, skildrar den
starka stormens och skeppsbrottets alla fasor samt fortsätter sålunda:
We found it to be the dangerous and dreaded Iland, or rather Ilands
of the Bermuda: whereof let mee give your Ladyship1 a briefe
de-scription, before I proceed to my narration. And that the rather,
because they.be so terrible to all that ever touched on them, and such
tempests, thunders, and other fearfull obiects are seene and heard
about them, that they be cnlled commonly, The Devils Ilands, and
are feared and avoyded of all sea travellers alive, abo ve any other
place in the world. Yet it pleased your mercifull God, to make even
this hideous and hated place, both the place of our safetie, and meanes
of our deliverance. And hereby also, I hope to deliver the world
from a foule and generall errour: it being counted of most, that they
can be no habitation- for Men, but rather given over to Devils and
wicked spirits; whereas indeed wee find them now by experience, to
be as habitable and commodious as most countries of te same
cli-mate and situation: insomuch as if the entrance into them were as
easie as the place it selfe is contenting, it had long ere this beene
inhabited, as well as other Ilands. Thus shall we make it appeare,
that Thruth is the daughter of , and that men ought not to
devy every thing which is not subiect to their owne sense.» -
De skeppsbrutne uppehöllo sig sju månader på Ögruppen, byggde
sig ett nytt fartyg af ceder, qvarlemnade några man, afseglade till och
utförde sitt uppdrag i Virginien samt återvände till Bermuda, hvarest
sir George Somers, som kan anses såsom koloniens förste styresman,
afled. Hans qvarlefvor fördes till England, der berättelsen om hans
lif och verksamhet på Bermuda uppväckte ett lifligt intresse för
ö-gruppen, föranledde bildandet af »The Bermuda Company» samt
kolonisters utsändande. ’Sedan den tiden, 1609—1612, har Bermuda
för-blifvit under Englands välde, en af dess minsta, men på grund af sitt
läge vigtigare kolonier, en liten överld för sig ute i verldshafvet, och
är i våra dagar berömd för sitt härliga klimat, sin egendomliga
hafs-natur, sina vackra cederskogar, oleandrar och liljor, snabbseglande
båtar och gästvän liga befolkning.
Bermuda är, geologiskt taladt, ett ungt land och företer i sin
