Andrew Carnegie, was born 1835 in Scotland, son of William
Carnegie. In 1848 the family emigrated to the United States and
settled in Allegheny, PA, now part of Pittsburgh, where Andrew started
a rapid career in the railroad industry. In the 1870s he concentrated
instead on steel production. In 1901, Andrew Carnegie sold his
company Carnegie Steel for $250 million and retired. His donations
have helped build universities and a vast number of public libraries.
