“Oh, Gösta, Gösta, how could you!” She hid her
face in her hands, crying.

“It is true what I said,” he answered. “I never
promised the Nygård girl to marry her. ‘Come here
next Friday, and you will see something amusing,’
was all I said to her. I cannot help it if she cared
for me.”

“Oh, it was not that; but how could you tell
the people I was good and pure? Gösta, Gösta,
you know I loved you when I had no right to do it!
I was ashamed, Gösta, I could have died of shame.”
And she shook with sobs.

He stood and looked at her. “Oh, my love, my
darling,” he said, softly. “How happy you are in
being so good! How happy you are in having such
a beautiful soul!”
