verschwindet es doch neben dem Wijkschen Palaste,
der sich wie ein Riese über die umherliegenden
Häusermassen erhebt ; von hier aus hat man einen
der prächtigsten Ueberblicke über die stolze, mit
schönen Häusern geschmückte südliche Hafenstrasse.
_ DJe andere Seite der Einfahrt in “Stora Bom-
men“ ist der Thätigkeit kommender Tage
Vorbehalten. Vor einigen Jahren ward hier eine grosse
Strecke Landes der Elbe abgewonnen und diese
wird in kurzer Zeit mit einem grossartigen Zollhaus
u. dazu gehörenden Magazinen geschmückt werden.
Oberhalb dieser Strecke sehen wir eine Reihe
grösserer Hauser, unter denen wir besonders das
frühere Björnbergsche bemerken, das seinen Namen
nach einem der stolzesten und mächtigsten
Geldfürsten des frühem Gothenburgs trägt, vor
demselben raste der einzige Auflauf, von dem Gothenburg’s
Annalen berichten, der sogenannte Björnbergsche
Aufruhr 1799, der vom Pöbel gegen den Inhaber des
Privilegiums der Branteweiusbrennerci gerichtet war.
l)ie Gegend bei “Stora Bommen“ ist eine von
Gothenburg’s besuchtesten. Die aus- und
inländische Dampfschiffsflotte hat hier ihren Ladungsplatz,
auch legt ein grösser Theil der Handelsschiffe, die
unsern Hafen besuchen, hier an, u. der Hafen zeigt
deshalb in den Sommermonaten ein so reges Leben,
dass man nur in grossen Handelsstädten ein
Gleiches sieht von disem Getreibe der Kommenden u.
Gehenden, Fahrenden und Trägern, Comtoristen
und Herumtreibern, Ballen u. Fässern! Wir sehen
hier einen der wichtigsten Puncte, durch den
unser Platz u. ein grösser Theil der Städte des
mittlern Schwedens mit der grossen Handelswelt des
Auslandes in Verbindung steht. Will man an schönen
Sommerabenden ein herrliches Schauspiel und einen
Hauch kühlender Seeluft gemessen, so geht man hier
spätzieren und besonders auf der beliebten langen
Holzbrücke. Die Elbe mit ihren klaren Wogen,
flaggenden Schiffe aus aller Welt Enden, Hisingen
mit seinen pittoresken Bergen u. fruchtbaren
lhä-lern, lveiller’s mechanische Werkstatt mit ihren
glühenden Dampfmaschinen u. rauchenden
Schornsteinen, all dieses ist von Interesse nicht nur für ein das
Schöne suchende Auge, sondern auch für den
Liebhaber von thätigem, rührigen und
vorvärtsstreben-den Leben.

Andra sidan af inloppet till Stora Bommen är
förbehållen kommande dagars verksamhet. Här har
för ett par år sedan en stor landvinning gjorts från
elfven. Den är nu förvandlad till fast iand och
kommer inom en ej aflägsen tid att prydas af ett
storartadt packhus med thy åtföljande magasiner.
Ofvanom denna sträcka se vi en rad af större hus,
bland hvilka vi särskildt bemärka det fordna
Björnbergska, som har sitt namn efter en af det fordna
Göteborgs stoltaste och mägtigaste penningkarlar.
Utanför detsamma rasade det enda upplopp,
Göteborgs häfder omtalar, det så kallade Björnbergska
upproret 1799, ett pöbeluppträde mot innehafvaren
af Kronans privilegium på bränvinstillverkningen
här på platsen.
Trakten omkring Stora, Bommen är en bland
Göteborgs mest besökta. Angfartygsflottan, både
den ut- och inländska, har här sin lastageplats,
likasom en stor del af de handelsfartyg, som besöka
vår hamn, här lägga till. Hamnen företer derföre
under sommarmånaderna en liflighet, hvartill man
ej, utom i stora handelsstäder, ser något motstycke.
På kommande och gående, körande och dragande,
kontorister och schåare, balar och 1’astager ingen
ända! Vi se här en af de vigtiga kanalerna, genom
hvilka vår plats och en god del af städerna i
mellersta Sverge stå med den stora handelsverlden uti
utlandet i kommunikation. — Vill man om
sommaraftonen njuta af ett naturfriskt skådespel, med litet
erinring om sjöluftens svalka, så promenerar man
här, i synnerhet på den för sådant ändamål särdeles
eftersökta s. k. “långa träbron“. Elfven med sina
klara vågor, de vimplande skeppen från jordens alla
delar, Hisingön med sina pittoreska berg och sina
fruktbara dalar, Keillers mekaniska verkstad med
sina flämtande ångmaschiner och flammande
skorstenar, allt erbjuder ett intresse, ej blott för det
skön-hetssökande ögat, utan ock för kärleken till ett
verksamt, idogt och framåtsträfvande lif.

province. The insignificant building next to this, contains the
Chancery of the province and the offices appertaining to it. Further on,
the house of the late Mr Dickson claims our attention, but
notwithstanding its dimensions, it vanishes, as it were, when
compared with the magnificent palace of Mr Wijk, which towers
like a giant above the surrounding blocks of buildings. From this
spot, Great South Harbor Street, adorned with proud and
beautiful buildings and forming the grand thoroughfare of
Gothenburg, lies open to the view.
The opposite side of the entrance of the Grand canal is
set apart as a field for the enterprise and activity of days to come.
AY it bin the last two years a considerable tract of land
has here been reclaimed from the river, and is now changed
into solid ground, which, at a no very distant period, will be
the site of an, extensive Custom-house with its accompanying
ware-houses. On this side, we also see a line of large
buildings, from amongst which we single out the so called “Björnberg
house“, deriving its name from its former owner having been one
oi the proudest and most powerful of the capitalists of
Gothenburg. In front of this building raged the only riot of which
mention is made in the annals of Gothenburg, under the
denomination of “The Björnberg riot 1799. It was a noisy
demonstration on the part of mob against the holder of
prerogatives granted by the crown for distilling brandy in this place.
The neighbourhood of “Stora Bomen“ which name I have
literally rendered “The Great Beam“, is one of the most
frequented parts of Gothenburg. Here the fleets of, both foreign
and inland-going steamers, and also a large number of the
sailing vessels that visit our port discharge and receive their
cargoes. The traffic and bustle is therefore, during the
summer-rnonths, considerable, and equals that of many a larger
commercial town. Here, there is no end ot coming and going,
driving and dragging, hurrrying, bustling und scamperiLg; an
incessant concourse sf Merchant’s clerks, sailors, lumpers and
lightermen. Here we see one of the most important channels, through
which the commerce of our city as well as that of a
great-number of the mid-land towns of Sweden is carried on with
the great marts of the world. 1° those who on a summer’s
evening delight in gazing on a lovely picture of nature’s own
painting and enjoying the fresh sea-breeze, I cau give no
better advice than that of taking a stroll on the much
frequented “Long wooden bridge“, which is admirably adapted for the
purpose of affording a fair view of the Göta Elf with her clear
waves bearing on their crests vessels from all parts of the world,
showing the colors of all nations; and on the opposite side of
her broad bosom, bathing the shores of the extensive island
“llisingen“, with its picturesque hills and fertile valleys; whilst
on the other hand are seen Mr Alex. Keillers Mechanical
Workshops with their fretting steam-engines and fuming chimneys.
All this affords a scene replete, with interest, not only to the
lover of natural beauties, but also to the admirer of a life
of activity, industry and progression.
