THE THEATRE OF GOTHENBURG.
flrtothenburgs reiche und glänzende Gesellschaft
hatte schon seit lange ein Theater vermisst, das
den Foi-derungen entsprechen konnte, die man in
unsern Tagen an einen Tempel der Göttinnen des
Gesanges stellt. Seit vielen Jahren hatte man sich
mit dem einzigen, damals existirenden begnügt, der
selbst den bescheidensten Ansprüchen wenig genügte.
Im Jahr 1856 ward auf Veranlassung vieler,
für diese Sache eifrigen Personen eine
Subscription eröffnet, die sich bald auf 150,000 Rdr belief,
eine Summe, die, wenn auch bedeutend, doch noch
lange nicht für den Zweck genügend angesehen
werden konnte. Bald genüge zeigte sich dies, da schon
am Schlüsse des nächsten Jahres nicht allein die
gezeichnete Summe aufgebraucht war, sondern sich
ausserdem auch noch eine bedeutende Schuld
angesammelt hatte. Die nächste Folge dieses Mangels
war die, dass die Fortsetzung der halb fertigen
Arbeit während des ganzen Winters 1857-1858
eingestellt werden musste. Man berechnete nun,
was die Fortsetzung und Vollendung des Baues
kosten könnte und nach dieser Calculation ward
11:111 einigen Privatpersonen eine Anleihe zu dem
Belauf der ursprünglich gezeichneten Summe
abgeschlossen.
Jetzt begann die Arbeit wieder mit vollem Eifer
und schritt mit solchem Erfolg vor, dass das
Theater schon im Herbst 1858 eingeweiht werden konnte.
— Der Entwurf war vom Architecten B. C. Malmberg
gezeichnet; die innern Ausschmückungen ’ wurden
dem Herrn Ahlborn übertragen und die
Decora-tionen von Professor Gropius in Berlin ausgeführt.
Das Theater liegt im Süden der Stadt, aussen
vor dem frühem Karls Thor. Die Umgebungen
bilden ein reizendes Gemälde; auf drei Seiten das
üppigste Grün von Bäumen und Rasenplätzen, aui
der vierten Wasser von dem hier vorbei gehenden
Wallgraben. Gothenburg hat nämlich in der letzten
Zeit seine öffentlichen Anlagen auch nach dieser
Seite hin erweitert und zeigt hier eine so reizende
und freundliche Natur, dass man sich kaum etwas
Besseres wünschen kann.

dagar har på ett dylikt sånggudinnornas tempel.
I flera årtionden hade man åtnöjt sig med den enda
då existerande, hvilken illa tillfredsstälde äfven de
aldra, måttligaste anspråk.
År 1856 öppnades, på föranstaltande af flera
för saken nitiska personer, en subskription, som
snart steg till 150,000 R:dr, en summa, som ehuru
respektabel, dock ännu ej kunde anses långt förslå
för ändamålet. Detta visade sig också snart, då
vid slutet af följande året ej allenast hela den
tecknade summan var medtagen, utan dessutom en
betydlig skuld åsamkad. Den närmaste följden af
denna brist var den, att fortsättningen af det
half-färdiga arbetet måste inställas under hela vintren
1857—1858. Man beräknade hvad byggnadens
fortsättning och afslutning skulle kosta och på grund
af denna kalkyl kontraherades med några enskilta
personer om ett lån på samma belopp, som den
ursprungligen tecknade summan. Nu började arbetet
åter ined full fart och fortgick med den framgång,
att teatern kunde invigas om hösten 1858.
Ritningen var uppgjord. af arkitekten B. C.
Malmberg. Den inre orneringen är verkstäld af
Hr Ahlborn. Dekorationerna äro utförda af
professor Gropius i Berlin.
Teatern är belägen söder om staden utom för
f. d. Karls port. Dess omgifningar utgöra en tafla
af aldra täckaste beskaffenhet. På trenne sidor den
yppigaste grönska af träd och gräsmattor, på den
fjerde vattnet i den här framgående Vallgrafven.
Göteborg har neml. på sednare tider utvidgat sina
offentliga planteringar också åt detta håll och
erbjuder här en natur så täck och tilltalande, att man
knappast kan önska sig den bättre.
I afseende på sjelfva teatern är man teml.
allmänt derom öfverens, att dess inre i hänseende till
smak, stil och elegans står framom exteriören. Väl
imponerar den medelst storheten af sina
proportioner, men ögat försonar sig ej lätt med en del ut-

theatre of such a nature as to satisfy the
requirements of the public of our day, with regard to the
temple of the muses.
For several deceniums, people were obliged to
content themselves with the only, then existing
theatre in the town, which was such as could by
no means satisfy the most moderate pretensions.
In the year 1856 a subscription was started
at the instigation of persons interested in the
matter, which within a short period amounted to 150,000
Riksdollars, a sum, which although not
inconsiderable, could, however, not be regarded as sufficient
to go far in the attainment of tbe intended object.
This also soon proved to be the case, for by the
end of the suceeding year, not only the whole of
the subscribed amount had been expended, but
moreover, debts to a considerable amount had
been incurred. The immediate consequece of this
was that the continuation of the half finished work
had to be inhibited during the whole of the winter
1857—1858.
An estimate was made as to the amount requisite for
continuing and completing the work and consequently
a loan was contracted for with several private
parties to the same amount as had originally been
subscribed. Now the work was recommenced in
earnest and progressed so rapidly that the theatre
was ready for opening by the autumn 1858.
The design was made by the architect B. C.
Malmberg. The interior decorations were executed
by M:r Ahlborn. The scenic department was
effected by Professor Gropius of Berlin.
The site of the Theatre is to the south of the
city outside of Charles’s Gate. Its environs, form
a picture of the prettiest description,, consisting of
trees and grass plots on three of its sides and
bordered on the fourth by the. water of the moat.
Amongst the improvements which have of late years
been effected in Gothenburg, that of extending
the plantations in and about the city has formed
