THE SKJUTS#BOY. 83
"Yes, if is awful fo fare so badly with a hired conveyance
and fo be cheated out of twenty rix-dollars, into the bargain."
)Iadarne de Dressen did hot appear fo be much troubled, but
was, nevertheless, arr#–q T. It seerned fo ber as though this
journey, unnecessary of itself, began with too much mischief that
ît should corne fo a good end. /krnelia did not know whether fo
laugh or fo weep; for, as rnany obstacles as she saw in ber way,
it was impossible fo look af the wry faces and the ridiculous
anger of ber father wlthout feelîng inclined fo laugh.
The driver had already been sent fo obtain help, when, ail aS
once, fo the unspeakable joy of the travellers, another carriage
appeared on the road. "God be thanked !" exclairned the lieu-
tenant-colonel, joyfully; "now I shall be enabled, at least, fo give
counter-orders, and discharge the horses which I bave ordered
so that X shall get off ai a cheaper rate, anyhow." His joy,
however, became stiil greater, when the carriage aiproached , and
a farniliar voice shouted, "Stop !" fo the driver.
"Your very obedient servant, #]:r. Borgenstierna! Whaç a
good fmoEune that we meet you here in out sad s$ate i we are in
a fine fix !"
The lieutenant-colonel was so polîte, that he extended iris
hand fo Borgenstierna in the rnos# unconcerned rnanner. The
latter descended from his carriage irnrnediately, inquired in
the rnost friendly way about their position, and offered
services.
The lieutenant-colonel’s first prayer was tha#, as ]Vit. Borgenstierna
had probably not ordered horses in advance, he would do
him the favour, and use his own, which he now, unfortunately,
could not use himself.
Borgenstierna had also ordered his horses in advance, but was
imrnediately ready fo assume the duty of discharging the horses
for the lieutenant-colonel.
"Well, you are going #o S$roernstad, I see," said De X)ressen,
after the most important rnatters had becn at#ended fo.
