53. Till The Christian Advocate and Journal
Dear Brethren,

Allow me through your columns to convey to the Christian
public of this country the deep sense I entertain of the unfeigned
kindness with which I have been received by the disciples of Christ
of various denominations, and of the interest with which my simple
statements regarding the state and prospects of religion in Sweden,
the purely catholic character and the very important objects of the
mission under my charge, and the necessity for increased liberality
in pursuing that mission, have been listened to. The experience of
the past fully assures me that Christians in America, under all the
financial difficulties of the present time, would cheerfully and soon

contributions spontaneously sent by Christian people in aid of the
Stockholm church — thus evidencing not only a desire to relieve
the difficulty, but an amount of Christian principle which ought
generally to operate on all such subjects; for assuredly it is a duty
to give aid in any good cause. Christians ought not to delay until
the impulse of a personal application is brought to bear upon their
