Vasa, however, proceeded without fear to further and
establish the Reformation in his realm.
To the national diet known as the Riksdag of
Vaster-as, convoked by the king for June 16, 1527, the four
estates—nobles, clergy, bourgeoisie, and
peasants—assembled in large numbers. As chancellor to the king,
Laurentius Andreae read the royal "Propositions" to
the Riksdag, from which we quote:
"A great outcry against His Grace has also been
raised, alleging that he fleeces the churches and
cloisters; likewise that he has brought in a new religion."
In answer, the Propositions set up the new principle
that the wealth of the churches and cloisters was the
property of the people, which, as such, was at die
disposal of the king and his council, acting on behalf of
the people."
We quote further: "His grace knows full well that
he is causing to be preached the pure Word and gospel
of God, as the Lord himself hath commanded.—
Furthermore, His Grace hath called hither a number of
those who so preach, and they are now present." The
king requested that the debate be carried on "in the
presence of you all, to the end that the party which is in
the right may be in power, supported by all, and thereby
all such strife be ended."
