CAP. XI.


                                        SOLENT quoque nocturni viatores , gregumque & armentorum
                                        excubiis intenti , portentis diversi generis circumfundi .
                                        De quibus Saxo Sialandicus sic cecinit:
Trux lemurum chorus.                                        Trux lemurum chorus aduehitur, præcepsque per auras
                                        Cursitat, & vastos edit ad astra sonos.
                                        Accedunt fauni satyris, panumque caterua
                                        Manibus admixta militat ore sero .
                                        Sylvanis coëunt aquili , laruæque nocentes .
                                        Cum lamiis callem participare student.
Saltum librantur furiæ , glomerantur eisdem
        Laruæ, quas simis fantua juncta premit
Virgilius.Scripsit de similibus Virgilius his verbis :
        Et vos agrestum præsentia numina Fauni.        Et Ovid.
Ovidius.        Sunt mihi semidei , sunt rustica numina Nymphæ.
        Quos quoniam cœli nondum dignamur honore,         Horatius:

Himantopodes.Faunos esse ,ac Satyros , similes illis spectris , quæ in multis locis Septentrionalis
Fauni.regionis , præsertim nocturno tempore , suum saltatorium orbem cum omnium
Musarum concentum versare solent . Sed post ortum solem quandoque rosidis
deprehenduntur vestigiis : velut Hotherus rex ( teste Saxone superiore cap. allegato)
Cingulum victoriæ.tres nymphas ad earum antra secutus , victoriæ zonam , & cingulum impetravit:
quandoque vero saltum adeo profunde in terram impresserant , vt locus , cui
assueverant,
