The French are attacking the Austrians near the town of
Ratisbon. On a low hill a mile or so away Napoleon is
standing, with his feet wide apart, his arms folded behind his back,
his head leaning forward, watching the operations.
While he is thus trying to follow what is going on, there
suddenly appears out of the smoke of the battery-fire a
horseman, galloping as fast as he can towards the hill.
On his arrivai he instantly jumps off his horse, and stands
at attention before the Emperor, who now sees that it is quite a
boy that has ridden up to him so rapidly.
Eagerly waiting to hear what the messenger has to say,
Napoleon does not at first observe that the boy has been shot
through the breast.
»We have taken Ratisbon, Emperor, by God’s help. The
General is in the market-place already, and Your Majesty will
be there too before long, to see cur flag Aying on the spot
where I set it up myself a little while ago.»
At these words Napoleon’s eye brightens with joy, but,
looking down once more at the boy, he all at once becomes
aware that he is seriously hurt.
»Why, you are wounded, my lad», he says gently.
»Nay, Sire, I am killed», is the boy’s reply, as he falls
down dead at his master’s feet.
