SANDVIKENS JERNVERKS AKTIEBOLAG 79

The Bessemer Works.

Sandviken was, for a long time, the staunch bulwark of the bessemer process in
Sweden.

In the nineties, however, the first Siemens-Martin furnace was built, and it was
discovered that, in certain cases, the new method was much more advantageous than the
bessemer, the superior tenacity of the martin steel making it better fitted than the other
for such products as had to be cold drawn or cold rolled. As, too, it was cheaper to
manufacture, it was quite natural that the Siemens-Martin process rapidly developed at the
expense of the bessemer. At present, only a small proportion of the total production of
the iron works is made by the method last named which, however, holds its own against
its cheaper rival when it is necessary to obtain metal with good welding properties or
which is intended for manufacturing sharply biting edge tools. For instance, bessemer
steel is employed for drill steel, tools for working stone or smithy work, for welding steel,
hard cold rolled products, &c.

HOT ROLLED PRODUCTS.

These, as a rule, chiefly consist of seamless boiler tubes and tube blooms, which latter
can be finished off by the buyers for various purposes, such as, the manufacture of cold
drawn boiler tubes, hollow shafts, bicycle tubes, tubes for aeroplanes &c. In consequence
of the high quality and the relatively great power of resistance against corrosion that
distinguish the Sandviken tube blooms, they have come greatly into use in many naval
