«4. SondefjordH lind. Sandefjord har 2 400
Tndb. og en smuk Beliggenhed ved Bunden af den
1 Mil lange Sandefjordsfjord. Byen, som blev
Kjøbstad 1845, har en betydelig Koffardiflaade og
Skibsbyggeri, 2 Kirker, Raadhus og Skolebygning; dens
nette og velstelte Huse gjør et behageligt Indtryk.
Byen er dog især bekjendt som et af de mest besøgte
Badesteder i Norden. Sardefjords Omegn er overalt
kuperet, og rig paa vakre Situationer; den frembyder
ogsaa et interessant Felt for geognostiske og geologiske
Studier, idet man flere Steder, navnlig ude ved Kysten,
finder mærkelige Jettegryder og Frictionsstriber. Af
Spadsertoure og andre Udflugter mærkes: 1) Over
Badeanstaltens Landeiendom Hjertnæs (forbi de 4
Bautastene), hvorfra haves smuk Udsigt over Fjorden; eller
langs Strandveien ud til Hjertnæs’s Udmark, en jevnt
stigende, skovbevoxet Aasryg, op gjennem Aasen
(hvorfra ogsaa smuk Udsigt haves) til de 3 i 1873 opdagede
og tømt o Jettegryder, der høre til de mærkeligste i sit
Slags. De ligge ved Siden af hverandre omtr. 150 Fod
o. II.; den største er 23 Fod dyb og i Diameter 21/,
Fod oventil og 5 Fod ved Bunden. 2) Fra Strandveien
til Gaarden Stub paa Fjordens Vestside og videre til
Randvigen, derfra til Bautastenen ved Hystad og til
„Dj ævlep or ten". 3) Til Mokollen mod Nord forbi
L’ræstegaarden opover Dølebakken, fra hvis Top haves
en vakker Udsigt over Byen og Fjorden. 4) Til
Kam-fjordvarden, 350 Fod høi, men let bestigelig, hvorfra
man i klart Veir har en henrivende og vid Udsigt bl.
a. over Tønsbergfjorden og Christianias orden lige til
den svenske Kyst. 5) Til Præstefjeldet. 6) Rundt

delightful prospect from here; for instance, across the
Tønsberg fjord and Christianiafjord, as far even as the
Coast of Sweden. 5) To Pr æste fjeldet. 6) Round
Kam-fjordkilen to Haga and Huviken, which places may
be reached also by boat from the town; and 7) To
the giant-caldrons of Vindal Bay, half a mile by boat
from Sandefjord.

»6. T>«njre*i:ndH-Krepjia. After leaving
Langesund, the steamer pass the Langaarsund, or
Lange-sunds-Kreppa, so narrow a passage, that the
coast-steamers can hardly pass through it.
SJ. Chrisfiansand This city, which was founded
by Christian IV in 1641, is built on a sandy plain, at
the mouih of the Otteraa, and contains 13,000
inhabitants, and is one of the most regularly built cities
in Europe. Covering an area of considerable extent,
and having been laid out on a grand scale, with
broad streets, while most of the houses are low
one-story buildings, the general impression conveyed to
the traveller is somewhat depressive. There seems
to be litlle trafic in the town: the broad streets
perhaps make it seem less than it really is.
Christian-sand has been the capital of the Stift since 1684, and
is a garrisoned city. The harbour which is safe and
capacious, with an entrance both short and easy, fs
visited by a large number of vessels, who make for
the port in stress of weather, or to repair and refit.
There are several dock-yards in the town, also a branch
of the Bank of Norway, and several charitable institu-
