Tema Vikings

In this tema, some texts were written in the Viking age, some were written in the middle ages to summarize the Viking age, and some were written a lot later (19th century), trying hard to emulate the old style.

Westbound

Norwegian, Danish, and Icelandic vikings are known for their raids and trades on Britain, Ireland, France, Greenland, and even North America. Our best sources are the Icelandic sagas of which Project Runeberg has published some, but more have been published by the Icelandic project Netútgáfan.

There certainly also exist British, Irish and French sources that tell about vikings. The Old English poem Beowulf is perhaps the most wellknown, although it covers a period in time that is earlier than viking age proper. It would be intreseting to learn more about this literature, and perhaps to publish some of it. Send your ideas and suggestions to Project Runeberg's editors!

Eastbound: Nestor's Chronicle (Nestorskrönikan)

Swedish vikings also went east across the Baltic Sea towards Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Russia, and via the rivers to Ukraine, Turkey, and Greece, as has been confirmed by archaeology. Swedish archaeologiest Mats G. Larsson has written several books on this fascinating topic.

One very interesting sources on the history of the Russian nation, written by a man named Nestor who lived in Kiev some 800 or 1000 years ago, is the Nestor's Chronicle. This is also an important source of knowledge of early Nordic history, and would be interesting for Project Runeberg to publish. The following editions are found in the Royal Library in Stockholm.
