Council will take in doctrinal questions. The
Norwegians need a school of their own. In the sciences they
are compelled to use Swedish texts, which is a hindrance.
They do not want to offend the Swedes, but it is a fact
that these have a tendency to adopt too much of the
spirit of the American college. Their extensive courses
in mathematics, philosophy, and all kinds of
philosophical sciences, serve to distract the thoughts and to
take time away from the more important theological
studies.”

The first formal action looking towards separation
of the groups in the Augustana Synod into two distinct
bodies was taken at the annual meeting held at Carver,
Minnesota, in June, 1868. In the eleventh session of the
meeting five members, A. Andreen, S. M. Krognaess,
Erland Carlson, J. Olsen, and R. Radik, jointly moved
that a committee, consisting of six Norwegian members,
three clerical and three lay, be appointed to consider
the establishment of a separate Norwegian Synod. This
committee was authorized to call a special meeting of
the Norwegian part of the Synod to consider the matter,
and report at the next annual meeting of the Synod.
The five proponents, two of whom were Swedes, namely
Andreen and Carlson, explained their proposition with
the following prefatory statement: “Since with the

years the two groups of the Synod have seen a
considerable extension and numerical growth, with the result
that the subjects for deliberation have grown numerous,
it will no doubt follow that in accordance with the
example set by other Lutheran bodies in America, a
division of the Synod is necessary. In that case it seems
to us that under the present conditions, nationality is
the most reasonable basis of division. Each of the two
