both officers and men stood brave and firm and never
faultered an Inch... Vanstrom and Gustafson both cried
when they heard that they were ordered to surrender—
Eustrom cursed and swore—... would to God that I had
never gone home when I did—& I am vain enough to
believe that this misfortune would not have happened—
I had much influence with the Colonel... We could have
fought them a day longer and then been reenforced...

July 26... our men have become much demoralised after
the surrender and they are very hard to manage except
Co D, were it not for them I think I should resign...

Little Rork, Ark Oct. 6 1863

ömma hulda maka... jag är ju med mitt gamla utmärkta
Rgte, jag älskar äfven mina soldater och till belöning har
jag deras vördnad, tacksamhet och vänskap—Aldrig kan
en befälhafvare stå i ett bättre förhållande till sina
under-hafvande... Ack hur de hafva fätt ängra att de gjorde mis
orätt förlid en vinter... jag har i sanning segrat och jas
är nöjd.

Little Rock, Ark., Oct. 6, 1863.

Sweet and tender wife... Why, I am together with my
splendid old Regiment, and furthermore, I love my
soldiers, and as a reward I have their respect, gratitude
and friendship—There can never be#a better relation
between a commander and his subordinates... Oh, how they
have been made to regret that they wronged me last
winter. .. I have truly conquered, and I am satisfied...

I am sitting beside your friend, Nels E. Johnson,
and writing at his request... He was three days In the
Vicksburg fight. New Years day he spent there.
Escaping unharmed from this engagement, he participated in
