and their barns... We have to drive from 20 to 40 miles
after (grain and fodder) but that does not cause much
concern, because we have horses and mules in abundance
and negroes enough to drive them and take care of
them...

För 2 dagar aedan lemnade jag på begäran Hospitalet 1
Quincy och gick på Rail-Road hit och kommer troligen
att gå härifrän i afton till Memphis och sedermera till
New Orleans sä vida jag ej dessförinnan blir dödad af
guerillas, som ofta beswära fartygen på wägen dit...
Bed för mig som är utsatt för så mänga faror och
frestelser____

Reverend Herr Professor:
.... am on the way to Texes.... My address will
henceforth be: Co. F. 77th Regt., 111. Vol., 13th Army Corps, 4th
Division, via Cairo, in the Field.
Two days ago, at my request, I was allowed to leave the
hospital in Quincy and arrived here by train... I »hall
probably leave here tonight for Memphis and later for
New Orleans... provided I am not killed by “guerillas’*
who often bother the ships on the way... Pray for me
who am exposed to so many dangers and temptations...
