NOTES AND COMMENTS
Dr. George M. Stephenson, assistant professor of
history at the University of Minnesota and member of
the publication committee of the Swedish Historical
Society, is this year serving as exchange professor in the
University of Ohio, and this arrangement has, by
reason of the extra work and responsibilities it
involves, prevented him from taking his usual active
part in the preparation of the present issue of the
Year Book. That he has been greatly missed, especially
by the other members of the publication committee,
can be easily understood. What real merit the Year
Book has had in the past two years has been largely
due to Dr. Stephenson’s valuable contributions of
articles and discriminating judgment on all matters
pertaining to the proper contents and their arrangement
in the publication. It is sincerely hoped that he will
be back at his regular post at the University of
Minnesota with the beginning of next school year.

The Council was fortunate in securing Dr. Conrad
Peterson, professor of history at Gustavus Adolphus
College, to make for this issue a compilation of Swedish
letters from the pioneer days together with translations
of the same, according to the plan followed in former
years by Dr. Stephenson. He spent a week last summer
in the Denkmann Memorial Library and in the archives
of Augustana Book Concern, Rock Island, and succeeded
