Botaniska Notiser 1946, Häfte 4. Lund

Further Notes ön the Genus Cliffortia.

By II. Weimarck.

(Meddelande från Lunds Botaniska Museum, N:r 80.)

Dr. L. Bolus, Curator of the Herbarium Bolusianum, Rondebosch,
has kindly sent me a large and very fine collection of Cliffortia
speci-mens for investigation. Several rare and otherwise interesting species
are included in (be collection. The specimens derive from different
parts of the Cape and most of them have been collected by E.
Ester-huysen, F. M. Leighton and T. P. Stokoe. I am also very much
in-debted to the Director of Ihe Kew Herbarium, who has al low ed me to
study the Cliffortia specimens which have accumulated during the last
10 years.

Up til now (Weimarck 1934, 1937, 1940 a, 1940 b) 81 Cliffortia
species are known to science. In the following pages 6 new species are
described and furlhermore some nötes ön other interesting types are
published. One of the new species, C. arcuata, belougs to the seel.
Petiolatae, one, C. aculeata, to seel. Multinerviae and the remaining
four to seel. Costatae. Of these species C. aculeata has been mentioned
already heldre, viz. in Weimarck 1934, p. 159, but was then only
indicated »Cliffortia sp. (’2)». The specimen known at that linie was
sterile and did nol allow a möre lliorough description. C. aculeata is
in facl a niorphologically peculiar species which has been here referred
lo the seel. Multinerviae allhough the species externally resembles certain
types of the seel. Simplices. Willi regard lo the floral organs and the
form of the fruits and receptacles C. aculeata comes so close to C.
gra-minea that |here is little uncertainty about its affinity. Furthermore,
the two species in all probability form an intermediale hybrid, discussed
in lliis paper pp. 412, 413.

Of the four new species within the sect. Costatae only C. dispar
rnay lie mentioned here. This type is the only known species of the
section with both 3-foliolate and simple leaves. Most leaves are 3-folio-
