and continuous with thalline gonidia, or margins somelimes wilhout
gonidia, 30 ij. i hick, pale brown. Iiypothecium lo 70 ij. al cenlre,
ilens-shaped and dark fulvous brown, extenuated at sides and not rising
|here. Thecium 60—70 ij., subhyaline, 1+ dark blue, upper 8—10 ij.
greenish brown. Paraphyses 1—1.5 a, ± distinct, apices contiguous,
■1—5 ij., subcapitate, in KOH discrete, capitate, upper hall’ brown (almost
as in Biielliu punctiformis). Spores 8, 11—13X6—6.5 (7j ij:, greenish
brown, thin-walled, with thin Sep tum (resembling those in B.
punctiformis) .
In thallus below one upothecium three pycnidia, 70 100 ij. diam.,
with pale or at the moutli brown walls. Gonidia dense, 15 —20X0.5 ij.,
intricately bent (recorded also by Tuck. 1877).
As the species is rather variable in appearance 1 have created the
following three formae beginning with the typical form.
f. obscura 11. Magn. n. f. — Thallus saturate umbrinus, tenuis,
laevigatus, subareolatus. Apothecia minuta, basi innata, plana, atra.
Specimen seen 0.5—1 cm large, orbicular, thicker at cenlre and
there indistinctly areolate with ± numerous apothecia, 0.2—0.3 mm
wide, gradually extenuated and effuse at circumference.

f. tenuis H. Magn. n. f. — Thallus tenuis, effusus, pallide cinereus
vel glaucus. Apothecia plana, marginata, atra.
Thallus continuous in small patches, or + dissolved, nol dislinctly
areolate. Apothecia dense, thin, somelimes slightly convex.
Massachusetts: New Bedford, H. Willey, ön smooth bark
(U., 2 spec.). — Maine: Prince’s Point, near Brunswick, Arcadia
Inn, ön Popilius and Syrinya; Wood Island, ön Myrica, all Ihree in hb.

Resembles of|en a Buellia species, because the thalline margin is
very indistinct and substituted by a + brown proper margin, möre or
less fading out, however, at base of margin. Thallus heside the
apothecia with about 20 u. thick, hyaline, cellulär cortex.
f. incrassata H. Magn. n. f. — Thallus låte expansus, incrassatus,
variegate pallidus et olivaceo-fuscescens, granulalus. Apothecia densa,
plana vel convexa, saepe immarginata.
Thallus covering at least 5X3 cm area. Apothecia 0.3—0.45 mm
wide, generally + sunk into the thallus. — A section of one convex
