9. R. pennsylvanien 11. Magn. n. sp.
Thallus effusus, cinereus, tennis, insulatim crassior et subareolatus,
hypothallo subcaeruleo-cinereo, tenuissimo låte cinctus. Apothecia saepe
insulatim approximata, areolis innata, minuta, disco atro, subplano,
margine tliallino subtenui, non prominente cincto. Hypothecium
fulvo-fuscescens. Apices paraphysarum capitatae, KOH contiguae,
fusco-fulvae. Sporae octonae, minutae, distincte constrictae, pariete uniformi
tenni.
Thallus at least 4X2 cm large, sometimes interrupted, forming
groups of subverruciform areolae, surrounded by the hypothallus.
Apothecia 0.25—0.4(0.5) mm wide, KOH+ yellow, disc in thallus level,
sometimes slightly convex.
Apothecia 0.15 mm thick upon 0.15—0.2 mm thallus and pale to
base. Cortex and exciple aksent, the 8—12 [j. gonidia touching the
thecium. Hypothecium 50—80 u.. dark fulvous or brownish fulvous,
luniina 1—1.5 ij., brighter in KOH. Thecium 70 ;j. high. hyaline, 1+ dark
blue like most part of hypothecium; upper 5—8 [j. yellowish brown from
the contiguous, 3—3.5 [j tips of the paraphyses, also in KOH contiguous,
capitate, paraphyses in much gelatine. Spores 8, abundant, often free,
dark brownish green, 12—14X7—7.5(8) u, wall like septum thin. —
Thallus with intricate hyphae between the gonidia.
P ennsylvani a. 1883, Eckfeldt (L.jj. Ön smooth bark,
prob-ably birch.
This species is characterized by the predominating darker
hypothallus with groups of irregular, paler areolae bearing blackish
apothecia, bv the brownish hypothecium, the capitate paraphyses and the
rather small spores of sophodes-lype.
10. R. inaequalis H. Magn. n. sp.
Thallus cinereus, icrassus, inaequalis, effusus, non distincte
areo-latus vel verrucosus, KOH+ flavus. Apothecia crebra, innata, minuta,
difformia, disco fuscoatro, piano vel irregulari, margine tliallino crasso
prominente, varie crenulato vel verrucoso. Hypothecium subfuscum.
Thecium altitudine mediocri, superne flavofuscum, paraphysibus
capi-tatis. Sporae octonae, minutae, auguste ellipsoideae, pariete uniformi,
tenuissimo.
The small thalli are inserted between other lichens (e.g. Buellia cf.
pleiotera and Lecanora sp.) and confluent with them, they are in part
rather thin and relatively smooth, in part thick, and rugose. Apothecia
