KOH transparent wilh intricate, narrow liyphae. Exciple apparently
12—15 ij., indislinctly limited, in iodine onlv 5—8 ;j. uncoloured all
round. Hypothecium 35—50 ij., hyaline, granular, 1+ dark hlue.
Thecium 80—85 [j., 1+ dark hlue; upper 12-15 ij. olivaceous yellow,
granular, in KOH still granular, in Pd ochraceous from numerous
crystals. Paraphyses contiguous, apices indistinct in KOH, bul ön
addition of HNO;i + distinct, branched, partly 3 [j. thick, clavate, partly
only 1.5 ;j.. Spores 8, 17—20X9—10 [j.. apical wall 3—3.5 [j., straight
across or ± convex inwards, dark brownish green, septum 3—4 [j.,
central lamella + distinct.
Washingt o n. Marysville 1927, J. M. Grant (hb Mn) ön Sulix
bark with Lecanora tetraspora and CaloplaCa sp.
A new description is given here in conformitv with tliose of the
other described species.
18. R. exigua (Ach.) S. Gray.
This species is published by Herre (1910) and Hasse (1913) from
California and by Fink (1935): »throughout the United States», bul
1 have seen no specimen in the Swedish herbaria. Hasse-Plitt exs.
117 (S.) s. n. R. exigua, from St. Monica Range, California, is Buellia sp.
like Cumm. exs. 163 c, s. n. R. sophodes e. exigua (hb. Gbg), from San
Bernardino, California.

Description of a ivpical specimen from Washington: Thallus
covering 4X2 cm area, pale umber-coloured, thin, smoolh hut crackv,
limited and intersected by blackish brown lines, KOH —, CaCl—, Pd - .
Apotliecia numerous, dispersed, blackish brown, 0.5- 1 mm wide,
firmly appressed, orbicular, as young plane, often pruinose and with
a thin, concolorous margin, soon +convex to half globose with excluded
margin.
Apotliecia 0.3—0.4 mm thick, pale part about 200 [j. deep, gonidia
only at centre of base in a tissue with enclosed air. Exciple at Ihe very
edge 50—35 [j. broad, brown fulvous, below to 75 u. thick, ± hyaline
with horizontal strands of brown-fulvous tissue, hvphae intricate, no
distinct cells. Central part ( = exciple + confhient hypothecium) up to
