all rond. No corlex at edge, at base 35—50 [j., hyaline wilh yellowish
brown surface and + thin-walled, 5 -8 [j. large, irregularly rounded
cells. Exciple very distinct, at edge to 50 [j. thick with 2.5(—3.5) [j. cells,
laterally 17—20 u. with horizontally stretched cells, and at base the
same, partly yellowish, 30- 40 [j., subgrumose, 1 like corlex. Thecium
150—200 [j. high, hyaline or yellowish, 1+ dark hlue like + thick
hypothecium; upper 25 ij. bright recldish brown without distinct tips of
paraphyses. Paraphyses in lillie gelaline, 1.7 [j. with long artides and
partly visible cylindrical lumina, tips in KOH distinct, 4—5 p., yellowish
brown. Spores 8, 25—37X12—18 [j., dark olivaceous, as young with
7—5 [j. thick apical wall, convex inwards or going slraighl across, lumina
broader than long, septum 1.5—3(7) [j., as ripe with about 3 [j. thick
apical wall and globose cells, central lamella indistinct.

Oregon: Forest Grove 1899. Ön Acer macropliyllum. A. R.
Sweetser in Cumm. exs. 262.

R. oregona resembles at the first glance R. turfacea f. ecrustacea
although with another shade of brown. But ils corlex bas large, rather
thin-walled cells and no positiv I-reaction and there are some smaller
separating features. 11 is associated with a mat of pale yellowish green
algal threads, indicating a moist situation.

23. R. subsophodes (Nyl.) Zahlbr.

Catal. lich. 7:555, 1931. — Lecanora subsophodes Nyl., Enum.
lich.: 115, 1857 (nomen nudum). Hue, Lich. exot.: 139, 1892 (no. 1294)
with description.

The specimen seen only 1X0.7 cm wide upon thick bark. Thallus
pale brown or alutaceous, very thin, consisting of contiguous or
sub-dispersed, smooth areolae. Apotliecia scattered, 0.4—0.5 mm large,
sessile, disc brownish black, concave lo plane, surrounded hy a turgid,
prominent thalline margin, in some apotliecia 1’ainlly crenulate.

Apothecial seclions in water 0.6X0.2–0.27 mm, slightly convex,
pale part 170—200 [j. deep, KOH—, Pd—. Margin 60—70 [j, thick,
partly with 5—8 p. gonidia lo edge, partly formed by the exciple.
Go-nidial stratum 25—35 ij. thick, conlinuing all round, obscured by air
in the margin. Exteriör 15—35 ij, yellowish brown ( = cortex?), hyphae
conglutinae, indistinct, no cells visible. Exciple laterally 20—25 ij.,
hyaline, widened at edge and yellowish brown, below 20—30 [j., hyaline
with very small, irregular or horizontally stretched cells, I .
Hypothecium about 35 [/., hyphae intricate, dense. Thecium 120—135 [j. high,
1+ dark hlue like hypothecium; upper 10—15 u. dark olivaceous yellow.
