BIDRAG TILL SKÅNES FLORA 37. QUERCUS PKTRAEA 191

Fig. 2. The distribution of gneiss moraine in Skåne iinainly alter Ekström 1936,
1940 . Within the area of the gneiss moraine there occur small patches of cretaceous
formation and soils rich in lime (Lundegren 1934, Weimarck 1942b). Furthermore,
especially in the north-east, hills and ridges built up of diabase are met with. Soils
which derive Iheir origin more or less from these formations are usually more
alkaline than the pure gneiss moraine. Linderödsåsen and the western part of
Hallandsåsen are also covered with gneiss moraines but in these areas material
from the cretaceous formation from respectively the Båstad region and the
Kristianstad plain constitute a more or less significant share of the soils, at least in
somewhat greater depths. Therefore the moraines in question cannot be referred to the
gneiss moraines s. str.. at least not from an ecological point of view. This is above
all true with reference to species with a deep-going rootsystem. e.g. Quercus petraea.
