II. WEIMARCK
is furthermore known from a single locality in Öland. In Finland the
sessile oak is lacking, so far as is known (Weimarck 1947 b, map
p. 111).
In Skåne (fig. 1) Q. petraea is abundant in the north from the
middle part of Hallandsåsen in the west to the boundary between Skåne
and Blekinge in the east and from there to the neighbourhood of
Sösdala south of Finjasjön. Further south, in the parishes of Tjörnarp
and Höör, the species is found in only a few places. Outside the
continuous distribution area the sessile oak occurs in scattered smaller
localities: at Hov in the western border of Hallandsåsen, in the island
of Hallands Väderö, in Kullen, at Ekebo in Svalöv and in the precipices
near Gladelund south-west of the mountain of Stenshuvud.
The sessile oak seldom forms pure woods in Skåne. As a rule it
is only a member in woods where other trees, above all Q. Robur, are
the most prominent components.
Especially striking with regard to the distribution in the province
of Skåne are the sharp boundaries between regions where the species
occurs with a great frequency, and areas where it is rare or entirely
lacking. This is particularly the case in the north-east, north of the
Kristianstad plain, in the area south of Hässleholm, in Söderåsen and
in the extreme north-west in Hallandsåsen.
During some of the earlier years of the investigation of the flora
and vegetation of Skåne I had my work in the northern part of the
province, where Q. petraea is a common tree (Weimarck 1939, 1942 a).
Later on my investigations had reference to districts situated at the
boundaries of the species (Weimarck 1944), and this circumstance had
great importance for mv continued research on this subject. It was first
at the borders of the distribution area that I got an idea of the way in
which the problem of distribution and ecology of the sessile oak ought
to be attacked.
But not only during my own investigations but in an equally high
degree during my visits to other associates working under the Botanical
Society in the section »Skånes Flora» I had ample opportunities for
studying the boundaries of the sessile oak. This was especially
applicable to Söderåsen, where Mrs. Margaret Overton-Haikola, fil. måg.,
(1944) investigated Kågeröd on the western side, and Mr. Torsten
Håkansson, fil. måg., explored the flora and vegetation in Konga,
Stene-stad and parts of Biseberga, i.e. the upper and eastern areas of this
»highland». Whereas Q. petraea is a characteristic tree in certain parts
of the eastern slopes, in the upper region and in the higher western
