The United Nations and the CBC

One of the important functions of the International Service of the Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation is that of providing its listeners with radio coverage
of international bodies whose main purpose is to establish and operate the
machinery of world peace. In so doing it has recognized the fact that the
success of any international organization is, in part, dependent on the support
which nations give to it.

In this respect two factors have helped to make the contribution of the
International Service of particular significance: first, that many international
organizations, including UNO itself, have established their permanent head-
quarters in North America; and second, that the shortwave facilities of the
CBC have proven useful to it. In planning its coverage of the second General
Assembly of the United Nations, the International Service resolved to give
its fullest support to this undertaking. This it did by sending its own
correspondents to New York; it provided air time to foreign correspondents
and to delegates; in its newscasts it gave daily reports on the activities of the
Assembly. In addition, the International Service continued to place its
transmitters freely at the disposal of the Radio Division of the United Nations
for a period of an hour and a half each week-day.

In its commentaries the International Service sought to provide accurate
and well-considered reports on the day-to-day deliberations of the Assembly
as a whole. Its commentators included both members of its own staff and other
Canadians chosen for their knowledge of international affairs.

Correct information and accurate versions of discussions and statements
are essential for a balanced picture of any international deliberations, and
particularly where critical debates such as those of the United Nations
Assembly are concerned. In its short-wave newscasts the CBC provided its
listeners with objective accounts of these matters.

The coverage of the second General Assembly of the United Nations has
been the greatest single enterprise ever undertaken by the International
Service. It has placed a heavy tax upon the time and planning ability of the
administrative and program staff. In order to provide this service it is possible
that the regular daily programs were in some measure sacrificed, but it is hoped
that the importance of the undertaking more than outweighed this. There
is, in fact, evidence that the service rendered was useful and very much
appreciated. The CBC for its part is grateful for the friendly co-operation
extended by foreign broadcasting organizations, and through the International
Service the CBC is continuing to support the work of the UNO by giving
regular reports in all its languages just as Canada as a nation continues to
support the idea of a united nations through the participation of its represent-
atives.
