Program Notes

Each day four English language trans-
missions are directed to English
speaking listeners in the United King-
dom and Europe. The times and
frequencies of programs broadcast in
these transmissions are outlined on
the chart on pages 10 and 11 of this
booklet.

News and Commentary

News. Bulletins of Canadian and
international news are broadcast in
each of the four transmissions.

Daily Commentaries Following
News (except Saturdays). Four min-
utes of commentary follow the news
bulletins to Europe at 2210 GMT.
Sundays: “Quebec Commentary” with
speakers discussing in English the
affairs of French Canada. Sunday,
December 25th: Gérard Arthur offers a
Christmas commentary; Mondays:
Arthur Phelps from Montreal with
opinions and interpretations of the
current Canadian scene; Tuesdays:
Warren Baldwin, Toronto newspaper-
man, reports from Ottawa; Wednes-
days: Reports on the arts in Canada
by Canadian critics; Thursdays: A
news analysis by Martyn Estall of
Queen’s University; Fridays: ‘‘U.N.
Commentary” by King Gordon, CBC
correspondent at the United Nations.

Saturday Stories — Each Saturday,
following the news at 2210 GMT. On
December 24th, a Christmas story from
“The Tin Flute” by Gabrielle Roy.

Midweek Commentary (Wednes-
days). A discussion on political devel-
opments by well informed Canadians.

Weekend Review (Saturdays). A
review of the events of the week in
Canada and abroad. December 3rd,
J. B. McGeachy, well known to BBC
listeners; December 10th, Burton S.
Keirstead of the Department of
Economics of McGill University in
Montreal; December 17th, G. V. Fer-
guson of the editorial staff of "The

Frank Edwards continues "Tales of the St.

Lawrence”, legends known to inhabitants of

towns and cities on the banks of this great
Canadian river.

Montreal Star”; December 24th, J. B.
McGeachy; December 31st, Burton S.
Keirstead.

Actualities and Interviews

Canadian Chronicle (Monday to
Saturday). CBC reporters across
Canada gather information for this
chronicle of events which is broadcast
twice daily.

Canadians at Work (Friday), docu-
ments Canadian industry with actu-
ality reports from factories, farms and
offices. December 23rd and 24th: Re-
ports of special interest at Christmas
time.

Cross Section (Sundays). In Ottawa,
working for the Canadian government
and allied boards and commissions,
there exists a cross section of the
nation. Gordon Burwash interviews
during December public servants of
Canada who unfold the story of their
jobs, their lives and opinions.

Magazine Programs

Forest, Field and Farm. (Wednes-
days). Commentaries on the progress
of Canadian agriculture, food produc-
