such chemical pulping process are employed to produce sulphite, sulphate or
soda pulp, which obtain their names from the acid or alkali used in the cooking.
The type or mixtures of pulp employed determines the character of the paper
produced. Newsprint is composed of about 85 per cent groundwood and
15 per cent unbleached sulphite.
From Canada comes about 60 per cent of the world’s newsprint supply.
As a pulp producer, Canada stands second only to the United States; as a
pulp exporter, second only to Sweden. Her production also includes more
highly manufactured paper products such as napkins, towels, packaged toilet
papers, coated and treated papers, boxes, envelopes, stationery, and other cut
paper and boards.
Canadian mills range from small pulping plants which produce 10 tons of
groundwood pulp per day, to large newsprint mills which turn out nearly
1,000 tons of paper every 24 hours. The industry employs permanently
56,000 people in the mills and 9,000 in the year-round forest operations. In
addition, it provides seasonal employment in the woods to more than 250,000
woods workers and log drivers, many of whom are farmers who, during their
off-season, substantially increase their annual income. The industry’s annual
payroll is around $270 million.
Canadian pulp and paper mills turn out some eight million tons of products
annually. The value of these products exceeds $825 million. Capital invest-
ment in mills, forest installations, and hydro-electric developments total well
in excess of $1 billion.
Today the pulp and paper industry maintains its traditional place in
Canadian economy: first in production, employment, exports and investment,
and a major contributor to other great Canadian industries.
