The Marine Section was constituted in 1931 and the Aviation Section in
1937. These two sections have greatly facilitated the work of the force in its
jurisdiction over an area as large as the whole of Europe.
From the Justice Building in the heart of the capital, the operations of
thirteen divisions mustering a uniformed strength of 2,500 officers and men,
aided by 1,000 special constables and civilian employees, are now directed
and co-ordinated,
Although its character has changed since its formation, the Royal Canadian
Mounted Police still reflects much of the glamour of the frontier through its
northern and far-flung detachments. Assignments range from Arctic patrolling
and the supervision of Eskimos, to ordinary prevention work concerning the
contraband of narcotic drugs, counterfeiting, identification and classification
of criminals. It assumes the protection of public buildings, makes reports on
migratory birds, fur-bearing animals, and hunting out of season. It takes part
in the application of customs and excise laws, and to a small extent, of immigra-
tion regulations. It investigates naturalization papers and passports, makes
enquiries on the applicants for civil service positions, enforces statutes govern-
ing the Indians, and many other federal enactments.
Quietly the Royal Canadian Mounted Police lives up to its motto:
Uphold the Right! Maintiens le Droit!
