Royal Tour of Canada
PEEING the month of October, Her Royal Highness, Princess Elizabeth
and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, will be guests of the Govern-
ment and people of the Dominion of Canada.
The presence of Princess Elizabeth and her husband in our country will
recall vividly to many Canadians, young and old, the occasion when the present
King and Queen visited Canada in 1939. At that time, the people of Canada
from the Atlantic to the Pacific gave the regal party a royal welcome. This is
not an empty phrase. The people of Canada.were then deeply stirred as they
will be on the occasion of this royal visit of the Princess and her husband.
We will make the most of the opportunity to extend to these young people,
who are already so firmly established in the hearts and imaginations of us all,
a genuine Canadian welcome.
The royal tour will take the young couple across the whole of this vast
country. It will give Princess Elizabeth an opportunity to see this land of
ours, to experience at first hand the warm hospitality of Canadian people
everywhere, to see our government function as the representative, elected
parliament of a free, independent nation within the. British Commonwealth
of Nations. This tour will, we hope, result in making very real and vivid to
the future queen of Canada the nature and character of the people who live
in this part of the Commonwealth and their institutions. We say the queen
of Canada quite deliberately, because that is what she will, by the grace
of God, be. Her father, King George, is the King of England but he is also
the King of Canada. He is the acknowledged symbol in this country, as in
every part of the British Commonwealth, of the great organization that that
Commonwealth represents.
During their royal progress through Canada, the Princess and her husband
have asked that they may have one week of holidays — surely a modest
request. The people of Canada will see that this holiday is as free from intrusion
as possible. Where the holiday will be spent is not yet clear at this writing
but we will be proud as Canadians to think that somewhere in our vast country
our future Queen and her husband are enjoying the same sort of restful
relaxation which we ourselves delight in at many of our beautiful resorts.
Undoubtedly, one of the most important aspects of this visit — important
for us in Canada and important, we think, for the whole world — will be a
strengthening and a heightening of the sense of solidarity and community of
interest which exists among the component parts of the British Commonwealth
of Nations. There will be a strengthening too of the sense of the British
heritage which is ours and which together with our rich French tradition forms
the basis of so much that is Canadian in our institutions, our parliamentary
system, our culture, by which we mean our way of life, whether in its simplest
or in its most ceremonial manifestations.
