The Tenth Anniversary

Canada has now completed ten years of shortwave broadcasting
to the world. Years of study and planning preceded the test
broadcasts during the latter part of 1944 which led to the official
inauguration of the International Service of the Canadian Broad-
casting Corporation on February the 25th, 1945.

At the start, the International Service had two main objectives—
to broadcast news, entertainment, and the familiar voices of Canada
to the Canadian armed forces serving in Europe; and to broadcast
accurate news reports to people still under enemy rule. This was
achieved by a variety of programs which, in the beginning, were
broadcast in English, French, German and Czech. Soon the
programs were extended to include most European languages and
Canada’s shortwave facilities were also used for regular broadcasts
to Latin America and the Caribbean area as well as to Australia
and New Zealand.

After the war ended, the pattern of the programs was gradually
changed. An increasing number of broadcasts have dealt with
happenings inside Canada to give listeners abroad a vivid picture
of the country. With the growing importance of Canada on the
international scene, more emphasis was placed on explaining the
Canadian position with regard to the pressing problems facing the
world. And as Canadian servicemen were again sent overseas, first
to Korea and then to Western Europe, the shortwave facilities were
immediately put at the disposal of the Canadian Forces Broadcast
Service.

A growing number of programs prepared by the International
Service are relayed over local radio outlets in other countries.
In order to supplement the shortwave broadcasts, a transcription
service has been developed for the presentation of Canadian music
and artists. Plans are now going forward to extend the service
by preparing spoken-word programs on disks. These recorded
programs are distributed to radio networks and stations in all parts
of the world.
