The St. Lawrence Seaway |
During the last 50 years the international waters of the St. Lawrence river
have been the subject of careful study and negotiation between Canada and
the United States. The result is an agreement signed by the two countries
for the construction of the St. Lawrence seaway and power project. The
seaway, when completed in 1958, will make it possible for ocean-going vessels
to voyage inland from Montreal to such important lake ports as Toronto,
Hamilton, Buffalo, Cleveland and Toledo. |

Work on this great undertaking got under way last vear in the various
rapids sections, along the 180 mile stretch of the St. Lawrence river from Lake
Ontario to Montreal. The 225 foot drop in water levels between the two points
will require a system of seven locks, canals and power-dams to overcome the
difficulties of navigation. Canada has also started to deepen the channel of
the Welland Canal linking Lake Ontario with Lake Erie to the 27 foot depth
of the seaway.

Ultimately it is planned to deepen the connecting lake channels above
Lake Erie to provide similar access to Windsor, Detroit and Chicago and the
Lakehead ports of Duluth, Fort William and Port Arthur.

The new seaway will accommodate ships with from five to ten times the
cargo capacity of those now in use on the existing Canadian canal system;
this will enable freighters from all over the world to sail 2200 miles from the
Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the St. Lawrence river into the heart of

North America.
