Bernadotte: “As you are doubtless aware,
relations between Sweden and Germany are
extremely bad. Swedish public opinion is intensely
anti-German. This is principally because of
German cruelty in Norway and Denmark, the
scorched-earth policy in North Norway, and
above all the taking of hostages. German methods
in these countries are often in flagrant violation
of international conventions. Reichsminister
Himmler occupies a position that would make it
possible for him to adopt measures calculated to
improve Swedish-German relations. As I
understand the situation, this would be principally in
Germany’s interest.”
Kaltenbrunner: “Are you acting under official
instructions?”
Bernadotte: “No, but I can assure you that not
only the Swedish Government, but the whole
Swedish people, share the opinion I have just
indicated.”
Kaltenbrunner: “I am well aware that the
relations between our two countries are most
unsatisfactory, and I deplore it. I also know that
Reichsminister Himmler is particularly anxious
