and Sweden. But I must point out that the taking
of hostages has proved necessary in the fight
against sabotage. Similar measures have been taken
by the Russians without Swedish public opinion
being roused.”

Bernadotte: “It seems to me that it should be
of great importance for Germany not to make an
enemy of Sweden, whether Germany wins the
war or not.”

At this point the third person present at the
meeting joined in the conversation. It was
Brigadeführer[1] Walter Schellenberg. He remarked: “It
would be a great misfortune for Germany if
Sweden were to be dragged into the war against
her.”

Schellenberg, a man of about thirty-five, gave
me the impression of being the very antithesis of
Kaltenbrunner. A lawyer by profession, in 1940
he had been appointed chief of the Political
Section of the German Intelligence Service, and in
1944 head of the whole organization. In this
