dropped on Germany was another nail in the
coffins of the British Empire and the U.S.A. He
told me he was at that very time making a last
attempt, through special channels, to convince the
governments of the Anglo-Saxon countries of the
fate that awaited Europe if Germany were to
collapse, and he was going to appeal to Churchill and
Roosevelt to stop the offensive in the west and
to cease bombing German cities. He added that he
had very little hope of success.
After that Ribbentrop reversed himself and
with obvious lack of logic declared that it would
be more advantageous to Germany if Russia
occupied the European continent, rather than the
Western Allies. He went on to say that if the
German High Command should decide that the
line of the Oder could no longer be held, they
would prefer to “throw themselves into the arms
of Russia” and transfer a number of divisions to
the west, rather than surrender to England and
America. If the line of the Oder cracked, it was a
sign that Fate had decided that Europe should be
bolshevized. That would, he maintained, happen
in any case, even if western and central Germany
