approaching us at low altitude. My chauffeur and
I jumped out of the car and took cover behind
some trees. A moment later the bombers swept
over us at a height of only about thirty feet. I
readily admit that I felt cold shivers down my
spine, but our luck held. The Americans attacked
an objective a few hundred yards from where we
were and then disappeared.

But my most exciting drive came a little later.
On April 20th I left Friedrichsruh to go to Berlin,
where I had a meeting with Himmler. The war
in the air had by then become so intensified that
I was advised to take special precautions. I took
two chauffeurs, one of whom, seated on the
traveling trunk at the back of the car, was to act as
observer. He was instructed to signal by banging
the top of the car as soon as he saw Allied planes
approaching, thus warning us to stop, jump out,
and take whatever cover we could find. On our
way we passed through the town of Nauen,
twenty-six miles west of the capital. We noticed
blue and yellow flags, a signal that an air raid was
on, but as nothing seemed to be happening we
continued on our way until we reached the
