outskirts of the town. Seeing an old woman by the
side of the road, we pulled up, and I asked her if
a raid was on. Before she had time to reply, we
heard the dull drone of a large number of Allied
bombers. A few seconds later bombs were
dropped on the railway station, less than a
hundred yards away. We drove on out of the town
and took cover in a trench that had been dug at
the side of the road for the defense of the
adjoining village, the plan apparently being to sweep
the road with fire from anti-tank guns.

There was brilliant sunshine and a cloudless
sky as the Allied bombers swooped on towards
their targets. For about an hour we lay in our
trench, gazing at the fascinating spectacle of
Nauen and neighboring villages under heavy
attack. We could see the bombs leaving the planes,
after which what looked like a white column of
smoke rushed towards the ground at great speed,
and then there came a terrifying explosion. This
was the first time I had observed anything
approaching panic among the German population.
A crowded shelter had been hit, a number of
people killed, and men and women came running
