across the fields, aimlessly seeking shelter in
ditches and anything that offered cover of any
kind. It was as if the people of Nauen felt that
nothing could save them, since not even a few
fighters from the near-by airfield of Spandau went
up to engage the enemy.

A few days later in Denmark I had another
proof of the paralysis that had seized the
Luftwaffe. A Danish ambulance plane had been put
at my disposal, and we were just about to take
off from a German airfield at Skustrup, in
southern Jutland, when the air raid warning was
sounded and we saw American fighters attacking
some military installations near by. As we got
hastily out of our plane, the American fighters
were coming towards us at great speed. We threw
ourselves into a trench, and almost at the same
instant nine fighters roared over our heads,
machine guns going full blast. The attack lasted for
several hours. When it was over I sought out the
German commandant and asked him why he had
not ordered some of his own machines to go up,
for I had seen them, well camouflaged, on the
outlying parts of the airfield. He shrugged his
