Ten days later General Patton had penetrated
into Czechoslovakia. Northern Holland was
liberated, resistance in Hamburg had been
crushed, and the line defending Berlin was
cracking under the Russian assault. Hitler issued the
order: “Shoot any officers who order retreat.”

When I climbed into the night train from
Stockholm to Malmö on April 18th I knew that
great events were imminent, but I had no idea
how sensational they would be. On my arrival
in Copenhagen on the morning of the 19th, I was
flown to an airfield in South Jutland and was met
by a delegate of the Swedish Red Cross at the
Danish-German frontier. What he reported to
me was very alarming. It appeared that a couple
